Your first blog post will replace your first quiz on Into the Wild.  Please be aware that I will be grading your responses carefully and critically to make sure you have a complete understanding of the material.  Answer each discussion question completely, using the text as evidence of your reading.  Also, when replying to others, make sure you add new insights and elaborate on your responses!!!!

1.
Why do you think Chris changed his name to Alex? What is he hoping for with this new identity? Reflect on these two questions and how transcendentalism plays a role in these decisions.

2.  Chapter 4 ends with the following quote from McCandless’ journal: “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found” (37). Identify an experience from this chapter and explain what “meaning” you think Alex has found. Use a quote to support your explanation.

3. Before McCandless leaves for Alaska, Wayne Westerberg offers to buy him a plane ticket.  McCandless refuses, however, claiming, “flying would be cheating.  It would wreck the whole trip” (67).  Find and explain two quotes from this chapter that demonstrate whether or not McCandless actually lives by his own words.

Each person in the group should and can use different quotes and explanations in the last two questions.  No answer should be exactly alike; you may not agree with McCandless' views or decisions and that will be reflected in your responses!

Question 1.)

I feel that Chris McCandless switched his name to Alex so that he could start fresh with a new identity.
He felt that the name he held before held him to his past and he could be his own man with a new identity. This
plays a role in transcendentalism in as they believe that we find our true selves when we our out in nature. He
was tired of living like his parents wanted him to and wanted to be his own man and fend for himself, which comes
into play when he is offered help along the way by many people and turns them down feeling he is cheating if he doesn;t
do this on his own . He felt as a whole that this trip was to help him discover the true meaning of life.

On July 10th, Chris hiked around Lake Mead which he saw as a mistake. In July the temperature was delirious and he suffered from heat stroke. The longer he was out the happier he was as he enjoyed minor brushes with the law, the company of other vagabonds, and allowing his life to be shaped by circumstances. When he gets a ride from the Buress he said when he would talk to Chris about what he has been doing that "But real happy. Said he'd been surviving on edible plants he identified from the book.Like he was real proud of it." This quote showed the joy that Chris got out of his journey to Alaska.

Question 3.)

One example of Chris living by his own words and teachings is with denied any sexual pleasures as his main passion was Nature and his trip to Alaska. He circled in his book "Chasity, is the flowering of a man; and what are called Genius, Heroism, Holiness, and the like, are but various fruits which suceed it". This quote shows that Chris believed that nature was the only way to happiness and that other things were
just temporary happiness and couldn't compare to nature. Another example of Chris living by his own words is when he was working on the grain farm and he tried working the machinery as it went with transcendentilist who believed in always trying new things. Westerburg said " Alex hadn't been around machinery much" showing that even though he had never done it before he wasn't afraid to try something new.

Q 1

I think he changed his name because he wanted to be someone different and live in a life unlike his own. He goes to all these states with nothing but a backpack, and he meets all these people that fall in love with him along the way. When he finally arrives in Alaska, he barely has anything to survive on. I believe that he knows it'll be tough to survive, but he wants to live with what nature gives him.

Question 1

I believe that Chris change his name to Alex because he found the new him through nature. This new name gave an embarked his journey through the wild. He also changed his name to escape his parents, because he said they would stop to no ends to find him and unfortunately that would have ended his self voyage to find his soul purpose through nature. With this new identity he is in hope of finding a new self, one that is more in touch with nature who only needs what he can carry on his back. Chris showed his transcendentalism by searching for answers in nature and the ideas that began his quest.

Question 2

Alex found that true joy is found without material things and being in nature will give him true happiness. I say this because chapter 4 focused on him getting caught by immigration on the way back into the United States. Then he travels to Los Vegas where he takes a job at McDonald’s, where he buries his things outside the city. Where for a few weeks he lives on the street with the homeless until he hits the road again to the Grand Canyon where his quote leaves him full of joy for the life he is living.

Chris lived by his words in the journey to Alaska because he said in the beginning he would live out of his backpack and off of nature. Even though he was persuaded not to take this journey, he follows through and this tragically leads to his death. Question 1

I believe Chris changed his name to Alex to disappear from his past life. It was like he wanted his entire life to start over. He didn't want anyone from his past to be able to track him down, and he figured that if he went by a different name then he wouldn't leave evidence of his presence behind. Transcendentalism plays a role in these decisions because Chris feels that he doesn't need anyone to help him live his life. He feels that he can do it by himself, and that he can escape society through creating a new identity for himself.

"Once Alex made up his mind about something, there was no changing it." This shows how people felt Chris acted when they tried to help him out. Many people tried to persuade Chris out of making certain choices to keep him out of danger, but if he wanted to do something then he did it. I believe he lived by this quote because he did not let others make his decisions for him.
"He acted like it was hard for him to be around people. I just figured that was because he'd spent so much time by himself." I don't really think Chris lived like this. He always seemed to get along with other people very well. I think he probably liked people, but he could only be around people for a little while because eventually they got on his nerves. For the most part I think he would rather be by himself, but sometimes he needed people to talk to.

Response to Michael's question 1

Transcendentalism is shown through his name change because he goes out into nature to find out what he is in the world for. He feels he must avoid society and do things for himself, or else the journey he is on will mean nothing,. Question One---

I believe that Alex changed his name to Chris during his time of traveling because he wanted a fresh new start that doesn’t involve the people he has been around his whole life. By changing his name, Alex made it to where his family member and friends could not find out the place that he was or his overall destination. With his new identity, Alex could completely strip away his past of being someone completely consumed with society. On page 18, it is said that “McCandless felt estranged from his parents and his siblings,”. By going out into the wilderness without any contact information, Alex was being self-reliant. Transcendentalists believed in being self-reliant and not depending on others for happiness or help in his journey. Chris even sold all of his belongings and gave away thousands of dollars to multiple charities. Chris was looking for an adventure. “he intended to invent an utterly new life for himself.” (pg 23-24).

Question Two---

All throughout chapter four, there were many experiences in which Alex found supplied a satisfaction he had never supplied to his soul. One particular experience that was noted in ‘Into the Wild’ was when Alex McCandless experienced a flashflood that took the very few belongings he had with it. Even though this would be considered a disastrous experience for many, Alex looked at it as a good thing. “He saw the flashflood as an opportunity to shed unnecessary baggage” (pg 29). This is another example of how transcendentalism played a role in Alex McCandless’ life because he did not need to depend on objects to make him happy.

Question Three---

Even though Alex McCandless says that “flying would be cheating. It would wreck the whole trip” (pg 67), I do not believe that he actually lives by his own words. There have been other instances within this chapter where McCandless depended on other people for help of some sort. For example, on page 67, Alex McCandless took Wayne’s mother up on her offer of him going to their house for supper. By eating supper that he did not ix and prepare his self, he is depending on others for is needs which he has said he doesn’t want to do. Another example of how McCandless doesn’t live by his own words is when he takes agreed to be drove to Interstate 94 by a friend of Wayne’s (pg 68). If Alex was serious about when he said that taking other transportation such as flying would be “cheating”, then it wouldn’t have been okay with him to be drove somewhere.

Response to Jacob Gulledge question one---

I completely agree that the reason Chris changed his name to Alex is because he wanted a fresh start. “Alex” wanted a life separate from the life he once had with his parents. I also believe that another reason why he changed his name is so the people that were once in his life such as his family and friends could not find him and tell him not to travel like he was. I like how you said that one of the reasons he went out into the wild the way he did was because he was carefree as to what others thought. This is another example of transcendentalism-- being carefree.

Response to Ashley Thalasinos question two---

I agree with your example of an experience that Chris gained meaning from. However, I do not see where you stated what meaning Chris learned behind that experience. In my own respond, I did indeed use the experience of the flashflood and how it took most of belongings. A meaning that I believe Chris gained from this fell into the laws of transcendentalism. Transcendentalists did not feel like they had to depend on the objects in this world to feel completely satisfied. So when Chris lost his material possessions to the flashflood, he clearly stated that this was a good thing because he lost “unnecessary baggage” (pg 29 ).

Response to Jacob Gulledge question three---

I like how you pointed out a law of transcendentalism in your response. By not wanting to count on others, he fulfills the law of transcendentalism because he is becoming more self-reliant. I believe that by going to Alaska, Chris has found the true experiences that satisfy his soul. This is more than likely the reason he decides he does not want to leave. He also acts carefree when it comes to never seeing certain people again. This is another law of transcendentalism in which he has fulfilled.

I agree with you that he changed his name to Alex so he could get rid of his part identity and start a new life. Question 1--
I think Chris changed his named to Alex for a number of reasons. He first of all didn't like his family very much, and was wanting to venture out on his own. He had a mind to himself and wanted to live a very different lifestyle. By changing his name he is creating a new person for himself. Giving him room to be anyone he wants to be. By making himself Alex, instead of Chris it gives him room to make new decisions and make a new lifestyle for himself. Through Alex's name change his is putting his old life, ways, and status behind him and now can only rely on himself, which is one value of transcendentalism. Changing your name gives you a complete new identity that you must recreate for yourself.

His trusty car, the Datsun breaks down and he has to decide whether he is going to get it fixed or continue his trip without a car, on foot. Alex chooses to embrace this instead of harp on it. On page 29 it says, " But there was a way to avoid such aggravation; He could simply abandon the Datsun and resume his odyssey on foot. And that's what he decided to do." Alex used this moment as a step in his journey, not a road block. Question 3--
In Alex's quote about flying being cheating and that it would ruin the trip I believe he truly means that. He wants to experience getting their on his own, and enjoy his trip there. However, I don't believe that he lives by his words in this statement. He has relied on people through out the story so far to get his where he is now and if he thought that a plane ticket was cheating, then any help from someone would be cheating his experience. In chapter seven Alex decides to work at a machinery company to gain some extra money for the trip. He did jobs that no one else wanted to get money for what he needed to journey to Alaska. On page 62 it says, " McCandless worked hard, doing dirty, tedious jobs that nobody else wanted to tackle; mucking out warehouses, exterminating vermin, painting, scything weeds. If he needed stuff for his journey he should have planned ahead for it, and not had to get a job to get money for it. Throughout the book McCandless relies on people to drive him places and give him food. He in this chapter ate dinner with Gail Borah most nights, therefore, meaning he didn't prepare his own dinner. On page 63 Borah says, " I had Alex over to the house for supper just about every night. He was a big eater. Never left any food on his plate."

question three
Chris is very independent and when he gets an idea in his head there is no getting it out. He wants to do things his own way and wants to do it by himself. That is why he did not accept the plane ticket because he wants to have an adventure and flying would ruin the whole thing.

reply to Ashley Thalasinos question one
I agree that Chris changed his name to get a fresh start on life. He did not want people knowing his real name so he wouldn't have to deal with parents because he did not want anything to do with them anymore.

reply to ragan question two
I agree that Chris experienced many roadblocks on his adventure. For example, his Datson he drove for a long time broke down in the desert and he tried to figure out a place to take it to get it fixed but his tags were dead and his license expired a long time ago. So, he just leaves his car in the desert and continues his journey on foot. Also, he does not complain like most people, he looks at the positives.

reply to ragan question three
I agree that Chris did technically cheat on his experience. If he thinks that getting a plane ticket from somebody is cheating then he has cheated this whole time. He is all the time getting a ride from many people and eating at people's houses. On page 63 Borah says, " I had Alex over to the house for supper just about every night. He was a big eater. Never left any food on his plate."
